"Society sucks, but you don't have to kill your classmates to stand out."
Pico, Pico's School

Pico is the titular main protagonist of the Adobe Flash series with the same name and a mascot of the popular multimedia site Newgrounds. Created by Tom Fulp in 1999, he made his debut appearance in Pico's School, where he saves his classmates from a group of rebellious goth kids who carry out a school shooting.

General information

Physical appearance

Pico wears a green T-shirt with darker green long sleeves, beige or green colored pants, and a pair of red sneakers with orange ankle patches and light brown soles. He has ginger hair and distinctive white eyes with no pupils as a stylistic choice. Sometimes, he is depicted with a tooth gap, most notably seen in some of MindChamber's art.

Personality

Pico was described as "popular" by his peers, being the first one to raise his hand in class, often using his words and speaking up whenever possible, showing his confident side. During the events of Pico's School, he is shown to act quite recklessly as he takes action immediately, despite the great danger he could be running into. In Pico vs. Überkids, he doesn't show any fear when faced with the gun in his mouth, and even pulls the trigger twice instead of just once as a strategic move.

Since the near-destruction of his school, Pico has developed an aggressive and homicidal side, rarely showing any fear and ruthlessly fighting anyone standing in his way. He is an exceptional gunman and is usually seen dual-wielding his weaponry with remarkable proficiency. However, he is also shown to be caring of his friends' safety and wellbeing, readily protecting Darnell and Nene without hesitation in Pico 2 and Resident Pico respectively. Along with this, he has proven himself to be a very trustworthy friend and ally, as seen in Friday Night Funkin' where he refuses to assassinate Boyfriend twice and even saves his life.

In Pico 2, Pico has an inconsistent personality. He is described by Darnell as having a non-confrontational, reserved, and shy side to him at school, but in public, Pico isn't afraid to confront strangers in his way and even threatens to stick a plastic bag over his local record shop owner's head for refusing to serve him. He is apologetic after his outbursts, and it is implied that he has a hard time controlling his temper.

In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, he behaves in a much more hospitable manner towards the Goth Punks, and is determined to encourage them to be more optimistic. He is outspoken and readily expresses disapproval of any behavior that he thinks is wrong, even if whom he is talking about is present.

Abilities

Pico's most notable skill is his proficiency with firearms, which are his primary weapon of choice. With them, he has remarkable accuracy and is capable of wielding two at once. He is most commonly seen with a submachine gun similar to a MAC-10 but has also used other types of guns such as the AK-47 and M16 assault rifles. He is also strong enough to be able to knock someone out with his bare fists, as seen in Pico 2. Pico is shown to have a talent for dancing, rapping, and using DJ turntables as well. According to Pico vs Bear, he is experienced at handling hostage situations.

Relationships

The following is based solely on canonical information.
Characters unrelated to the Pico franchise are not included.

Darnell

Pico and Darnell are close friends. In Pico 2, Pico rushes to stop the Ghettobots once he learns that they are actively threatening Darnell's life, and Darnell invites him over to his house to practice on a DJ turntable his mom bought for entertainment purposes.

However, in Friday Night Funkin', Pico and Darnell fistfight each other after rap battling, due to the former breaking the contract they had with Daddy Dearest to kill Boyfriend, which left Darnell in financial ruin. Afterwards, he and Pico shake hands and reconcile.

Nene

Pico and Nene have been confirmed to be friends. Despite this, their interactions are often unpleasant — in Pico's School, Nene begs Pico to kill her, and in Resident Pico, Nene coldly rejects his offer to protect her from the zombies because she prefers to "have [her] brains eaten". Though in the latter game, she does warn Pico about the zombies and advises him to run, meaning that at the very least she cares about his safety and doesn't want him to die.

In Friday Night Funkin', Nene attacks Pico with knives for breaking the contract they had with Daddy Dearest to kill Boyfriend, as she was left in financial ruin as a result. After spectating Pico's battle against Darnell, she angrily tears up a photo of Boyfriend, and it is unclear whether they make up by the end.

Boyfriend

Pico and Boyfriend are ex-boyfriends. There has been very little information revealed about their past relationship aside from the reason for their breakup being "complicated"[5] and it being hinted that they used to sing together, as the reason Pico rap battles against him is out of nostalgia and old habits,[6] implying that Pico misses him in some way.

In the present day, Pico proves himself to be more loyal to Boyfriend than his employer Daddy Dearest, as he goes against his orders twice — first to kill Boyfriend in his own Week, and second to check if he's dead in Tankman's Week by instead saving his life. It is unclear what Boyfriend feels towards Pico, but he appears to be completely fine being around him and even singing with him.

Father

Pico's relationship with his father is mostly unknown, but he seems to be neglectful toward his son. Interacting with a car in the Tom Fulp demo of Pico 2 prompts Pico to say, "My dad loves that car more than he loves me! I hope he crashes the damn thing into a brick wall!".

Timmy

According to Darnell in Pico 2, Pico barely makes eye contact with Timmy and generally ignores him because Pico is "shy and non-confrontational", but since he's been shown to be more the opposite, it was either a joke or incorrect assumption made by Darnell. The true reasoning behind Pico's disregard of Timmy is unknown.

Cassandra

Pico and Cassandra are enemies. In Pico's School, their interactions are generally antagonistic, though for unspecified reasons, Pico was curiously the only one left alive during Cassandra's initial massacre. Cyclops speculated that she had developed a crush on him, though he was being sarcastic. In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, Cassandra appears to have no notable reaction when Cyclops makes this claim in front of her, implying it was a mere joke. However, it is still somewhat ambiguous, as Cassandra neither explicitly confirms nor denies it.

Pico manages to talk Cassandra down from her planned shooting in Pico's School: Love Conquers All, and the two bond whilst he shows her the more positive aspects of Earth and its inhabitants. After Cassandra reflects upon her original plans of global takeover, genuinely feeling remorse for being a manipulator, she and Pico would become friends as she is truly reformed.

History

Pico's School

In Pico's School, we are introduced to Pico, who is learning about fruit in his class until Cassandra, the leader of the Goth Punks, kills everyone in the classroom except for Pico, forcing him to take action to stop them. Whilst running through the hallways, he finds a rifle in the janitor's closet and proceeds to gun down the school shooters while saving the remaining students. After taking down Alucard, Cyclops and Hanzo, Pico corners Cassandra in the Teacher's Lounge and calls her out for killing innocent people simply out of spite before finally declaring that she "failed the test of life".

Cassandra, now aggravated, reveals her true intentions of world domination before exposing herself as a member of the Penilian race. Pico promptly subdues her by shooting at her exposed crotch, castrating the malicious alien. After he saves the school by finally defeating Cassandra, the Ghettobots join his class six months later to replace the dead students. Seeing another potential threat, Pico, with an angry expression, pulls out his gun in retaliation as the game ends on a cliffhanger.

FDA: Santa Dogg

In FDA: Santa Dogg, while not making a physical appearance, toy plushies of Pico are seen in the animated music video.

Pico vs. Überkids

In Pico vs. Überkids, Pico and his friends, Nene and Darnell, are introduced to the Überkids, genetically-engineered creations of the Human Genome Project. Pico, knowing they don't stand a chance against them, challenges them to Rock Paper Scissors Roulette, a game made purely of chance that could mean life or death. As one of the 3 playable characters, he plays against Überfred and pulls the trigger twice whenever he loses. In the end, Pico, Nene and Darnell succeed and the Überkids are discontinued as a result.

FDA Before Christmas

In FDA Before Christmas, Pico makes another cameo alongside Nene and Darnell. This time, he is dressed up in Barrel's skeleton costume from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Pico vs Bear

In Pico vs Bear, Pico, who had become an expert at handling hostage situations, is called in by the Assassin Organization to deal with Big Brown Bary, who is terrorizing children who came to visit the Big Blue House. Pico battles the evil bear and his minions, Hoe-Joe, Creepo, Piss & Poop, and Titty, and manages to eliminate all of them whilst freeing the surviving hostages.

UFA

In UFA, Pico is briefly mentioned in the introduction sequence. The backstory of the game reveals that after the events of Pico's School, he had been single-handedly preventing the Penilians from invading Earth with the help of the Ghettobots, whom he had taken control of. It is also stated that he ruled the world for 100 years. But after Pico's eventual death, the Penilians finally decided to invade Earth; only this time, to humiliate the humans.

Pico 2

Newgrounds Supporter Version

In the demo for the cancelled Pico's School sequel Pico 2, we recap the ending of the first game, where the Ghettobots joined Pico's class to replace the dead students one week after the school shooting, rather than six months later as previously stated. Darnell then explains to Pico that the Ghettobots aren't from North Philly, but rather from outer space, which leads him to conclude that the Penilians must have sent them as retaliation for foiling their plans.

After another confrontation with the Ghettobots on the school playground, Darnell and Pico leave the school, with Darnell instructing Pico to take the train to West Philly to "find out what's up". The west subway entrance is blocked by the DJ and his friends, who will only let Pico pass if he can prove himself as a DJ against him, and in a dance battle against Dax at Club Cool. The demo abruptly ends with Pico saying he should head to Darnell's house, as nothing happens once he gets there.

April Fools Version

In the non-canon April Fools' game Pico's School 2, during class with the Ghettobots, Pico is reminded of the school shooting when Mr. Flacit says they are going to be learning about vegetables. He then asks to go to the bathroom as an excuse to instead leave the school and get a gun, as he believes the Ghettobots are going to kill him. Once Pico obtains a rifle from the gun shop, the gun suddenly explodes. The game ends with a yellow screen reading "LOL APRIL FOOLZ" with two penises shaking in the bottom corners, accompanied by the sound of a bleating goat.

FDA: ASSWARP

In FDA: ASSWARP, Pico makes a cameo appearance as a zombie to promote Pico 2's release.

Resident Pico

In Resident Pico, Pico needs to shoot a horde of zombies who are roaming town with his AK-47 to protect both himself and Nene, despite her rejecting his offer and running off. He manages to kill all the undead approaching, including a large and very imposing zombie.

Pico Roulette

In Pico Roulette, Pico appears as a playable character.

Friday Night Funkin'

In Friday Night Funkin', Pico appears as the opponent of his eponymous Week. His songs are titled "Pico", "Philly Nice", and "Blammed". He was hired by Girlfriend's father to kill Boyfriend for humiliating him during Week 1. But upon finding Boyfriend, Pico recognizes him as a previous partner and decides to spare him instead, challenging him to a rap battle.

Pico later reappears in Week 7, having been hired by Daddy Dearest again to check if Boyfriend was dead after sending him and Girlfriend off to a vacation set up to kill him in Week 8, the Week chronologically taking place prior. Instead, Pico saves Boyfriend from Tankman and his soldiers, and is seen on the speakers shooting various Tankmen throughout the Week's last song, "Stress".

After messing up his job twice, Pico was now in deep trouble with Daddy Dearest, and a sneak peek for a future content release shows Pico fighting Darnell and running away from Nene, who is throwing knives at him.

Pico's School: Love Conquers All

In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, Pico takes a walk with Cassandra and convinces her and the Goth Punks not to shoot up the school by showing sympathy and sharing his similar interests with them. Cassandra later tells him that she is afraid to live with humans due to them being homophobic, and Penilians all being naturally gay. Pico shows her that not all humans are anti-gay by introducing her to his boyfriend, and this convinces Cassandra to give the Earth a chance. Pico then suggests they visit a museum to teach her more about Earth's culture; however, Cassandra reveals herself to be a furry by asking if there are any museums dedicated to furry art, leaving Pico and Boyfriend in shocked silence.

Though caught off-guard at first, he quickly arms himself and fires shots against the army of clones. After killing them all, he tries to order a milkshake from Shake-It, but quickly discovers it being run by the Ghettobots and immediately prepares for another fight.

Pico's Cousin 2

In Pico's Cousin 2, Pico makes a cameo appearance in the game's final battle. Along with Otis' father and grandmother, he is captured and imprisoned by the Neo Goth Punks (it's revealed that Hanzo is responsible). After he is saved by his younger cousin, Otis, he congratulates him for his efforts and promises to help prepare him for any future threats.

Pico vs. Convict

In Pico vs. Convict, Pico takes on the titular Convict at his school. He proves to be more than enough for Pico to handle, however, as he is caught off-guard by his shapeshifting abilities. After gaining assistance from Nene, he quickly goes to arm himself and retaliate. Now confronted with two Nenes fighting each other, Pico has to figure out which one of the Nenes is Convict. Killing one of them, it's revealed that he shot the real Nene, with Convict as the survivor. Pico is last seen being hugged by Convict, who reveals his face to the audience. His fate is left unknown.

Trivia

  • In Pico's World, an old Flash hub by Tom Fulp, many facts about Pico are listed:
    • Pico is neurodivergent, as he is an insomniac.
      • Pico's insomnia may contribute to his aggressive behavior at times, as irritability is a common symptom of insomnia.
      • It can be brought on by trauma or stress, which could also stem from his schizophrenia and paranoia brought on from the events of Pico's School.
    • He has obsessive behavior.
    • Pico is a wannabe DJ.
      • In Pico's School, according to Cyclops, Pico listens to techno music. This was expanded on in the mid-end 2000s music portal iteration of Newgrounds.
      • In Pico 2, Pico's interest in DJing is a plot point as he collects vinyl records from his local record store, 911 Records, and he regularly practices on the turntables with his best friend Darnell.
    • Pico is homicidal.
    • Pico is schizophrenic, which is also a form of neurodivergence.
      • It is often theorized by fans that Pico may have developed schizophrenia after the events of Pico's School, as trauma is the biggest cause of schizophrenia. Despite this, Pico would likely manage to cope with it and have a happy life with the help of his friends.
      • This could also be the reason why he keeps a weapon on him at all times in Friday Night Funkin', likely due to a fear of being attacked.
    • Pico has a 127 IQ. An IQ of 127 is classified as "superior", meaning Pico is intelligent.
  • Pico was originally created to be the mascot of Newgrounds in 1999, but was eventually phased out by Tankman in 2006.
  • It was speculated on Newgrounds for years that Pico and his friends were around 10–14 years old, but Tom Fulp confirmed that all the major characters in Pico's School are high school seniors (around 16–18 years old).[8]
    • However, Tom Fulp later went back on this statement, confirming that Pico and his friends do not have defined ages.[9]
    • In direct contrast to this, MindChamber personally stated that his depiction of Pico is 13 years old.[1]
  • Pico from Cosmic Fantasy 2 (1992), the character that inspired Pico's name.
Pico was originally named "Pogo", but Tom Fulp quickly changed it upon discovering the URL Pogo.com was in use.
    • Pico was named after the Cosmic Fantasy 2 character Pico, an anthropomorphic talking black cat hailing from another planet.[10]
  • Pico's design was directly inspired by an illustration for Children's Tylenol Cold in the 1990s.[11]
    • The JNCO mascot, Flamehead, has striking similarities to Pico in design. This caused Tom Fulp to believe Flamehead was a rip-off of Pico,[12] but he would later realize that Flamehead was created prior to Pico's existence.[13]
  • Pico is Tom Fulp's favorite character.[14]
  • Pico is American and lives in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • It has been debated among fans about whether the gun that Pico had been regularly depicted with since Pico's Unloaded was a Micro Uzi or a MAC-10. MindChamber settled this debate, confirming that the gun is based on a MAC-10.[15]
  • A common misconception about Pico is that he was the perpetrator of the school shooting that occurred in Pico's School. This is false, as Cassandra was the true perpetrator of the shooting, and Pico only arms himself to fight back against Cassandra and her gang to save his school; while he has the option to shoot innocent people in-game, that option is fully up to the player, and the fact that Nene, one of his potential victims, shows up in later games indicates that he canonically spares the innocents.
    • In Friday Night Funkin', Tankman pokes fun at this by sarcastically asking Pico, "Don't you have a school to shoot up?"
  • Pico enjoys smoking marijuana, as first seen in Pico's School.
    • His use of marijuana may be to manage his schizophrenia. Regular marijuana use is common in people diagnosed with schizophrenia, as it may reduce abnormal brain functions caused by it, such as delusions and paranoia, but it can also worsen symptoms and cause people to relapse.
  • In the Tom Fulp demo of Pico 2, it is heavily implied that Pico does not have a good relationship with his father. Upon clicking the red car parked in Pico's garage, he reveals that his dad loves that car more than him and hopes that he "crashes the damn thing into a brick wall".
  • In UFA, it is stated that Pico "ruled the world" after defeating the Penilians and the Ghettobots. It is unclear if Pico's cosmocratic status holds true, as the existence of a UFA arcade machine in Pico 2 and Pico's role as a contract killer in Friday Night Funkin' calls this into question.
  • The concept of Pico being Boyfriend's ex started out as a headcanon within the Friday Night Funkin' fandom. This gathered so much traction that Tom Fulp jokingly acknowledged it on Twitter saying that it was "official Pico 2 canon", leading people to believe that it was true. ninjamuffin99 initially clarified that this was a joke,[16] but later changed his mind and confirmed it was official canon.[17][18][19][20]
    • In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, the ending reveals that Pico and Boyfriend are a couple and everyone at his school accepts them. As their relationship was portrayed in a positive light, the game indicated Tom Fulp's approval of the idea of them once having been a couple.
  • Pico has non-canonically died a total of 3 times in the official Pico series:
    • Pico vs. Überkids - can shoot himself.
    • Pico Roulette - can shoot himself.
    • UFA - dies of old age.
  • Tom Fulp has confirmed that some of Pico's favorite music artists are Joy Division, Gary Numan, Natural Born Chillers, and The Cure.[8]
  • When asked about what subjects the Pico characters would major in if they entered college, Fulp replied that Pico would major in computer science.[8]

Notes

  1. While Tom Fulp has stated that "Pico and his friends don't really have super defined ages," MindChamber's statement contradicts this with regard to Pico.
