Big Brown Bary (originally named Bear and simplified as Bary) is the main antagonist of Pico vs Bear. He is a disgruntled children's TV show host who goes "mad with distemper". The violent bear acts as a boss to Hoe-Joe, Creepo, Piss and Poop, Titty and Shadow.

He is a parody of Bear, the main character of the children's show Bear in the Big Blue House.

General information

Physical appearance

Big Brown Bary is an overweight anthropomorphic grizzly bear with brown fur, light brown patches and prominent sharp fangs. He wears a dark green Army helmet, and is seen wielding a pump-action shotgun. After losing both of his arms fighting Pico, he discards his helmet and (somehow) straps himself with a suicide bomb vest.

In the initial 1999 release of Pico vs Bear, Bary's original in-game design bore a much closer resemblance to Bear, having yellowish-orange fur and lacking the army helmet.

Personality

It is unknown what Bary's personality was prior to the events of the game but, judging by his rants, it's possible that he cracked under the pressure of facing supposed expectations made towards "bears of this country". When he makes his first physical appearance, he has become delusional and borderline sociopathic, kidnapping and murdering his demographic of young children. He spouts out crazed ramblings that he smells "hate" and "destruction", and even takes enhanced drugs to cause more havoc. When finally backed into a corner, he decided to end his life with a suicide vest, while also trying to take Pico with him.

History

Pico vs Bear

In Pico vs Bear, Big Brown Bary kills and holds hostage several children who went to visit his Big Blue House. Pico, who had become an expert in handling hostage situations, is called in by the Commissioner of the Assassin Organization to deal with the situation by taking down the now irate kids' show host.

Bary is seen at the house's entrance, where the first fight commences. During the battle, Pico shoots the bear while hiding behind bushes to avoid being shot himself. Bary also calls Piss, Poop and Titty to aid him. After getting injured badly, the bear injects himself with a substance that causes him to get much faster and stronger, although he eventually loses his arms and flees in the house.

Big Brown Bary is later found in the kitchen, where he's revealed to have attached a bomb to himself. Pico defeats him by shooting the microwave and sink to electrocute and disarm the bomb, thus killing Bary and saving the surviving children in the building.

Pico vs. Convict

In Pico vs. Convict, Convict briefly takes the form into Big Brown Bary while he is brutally attacking Pico.

Trivia

• In Pico vs Bear, in Dr. Dirk van den Brink, Jr.'s psychoanalysis, many facts of Big Brown Bary are listed:
  • Bary has an immobile right arm that is "similar to Bob Dole's hand (and other parts of Mr. Dole [I wish] not to discuss)".
    • Regardless of this, he is fully capable of using his shotgun with both hands.
  • He forces the other residents of his house to labor to his benefit, in reference to the "Clean up the House" sequences seen throughout the show.
  • Bary has delusions of being able to talk to the moon, referring to Luna, the moon who Bear talks to at the end of every episode.
  • He is suspected to be a child molester, in relation to his daughter(?), Hoe-Joe.
  • Bary is apparently a horrible singer, often singing poorly and loudly; a jab at the show's abundant use of musical numbers.
  • He also has issues sniffing people, which is a subtle nod to Bear's incredibly strong sense of smell in the show.
• In the original 1999 release of Pico vs Bear, he was more directly based off of Bear, from having almost the exact same design to even sharing the same name. This was changed after the copyright lawsuit from The Jim Henson Company, leading to the more distinct redesign seen in-game.
• After taking the shot of adrenaline, Big Brown Bary will pause for one second before firing his shotgun.
• A hidden Easter egg in Pico vs Bear implies that Bary has a small penis.
• Despite losing both of his arms, Big Brown Bary is somehow still able to equip a suicide vest.
• In PICO VS BEAR DX, samples of Tom Fulp's original voice recordings for Bary were used in conjunction with new dialogue recorded by Dungeonation.
