Samurai Asshole (real name Fah Q') is the titular character and main protagonist of the 1999 Flash game of the same name. Created by Tom Fulp, he is a Japanese samurai who is dedicated to avenging the death of his master by slaughtering the religious leaders who held the event where he died. This is despite the master accidentally dying by choking on chicken and the leaders apologizing sympathetically.

His most recent appearance was as a playable character in the 2007 crossover fighting game, Newgrounds Rumble. He also non-canonically makes a cameo as the barman in Pico Sim Date <3.

General information

Physical appearance

Samurai Asshole has black hair styled in a ponytail, large blue eyebrows, and unlike most characters in the Pico series, he has white eyes with black pupils. He wears a formal white and blue kimono with matching sandals and a golden obi belt. He wields a large katana sword with a black and gold handle.

In Newgrounds Rumble, he is heavily redesigned, bearing little resemblance to his original incarnation. He now has bluer hair to match his bushy eyebrows, green eyes, the sleeves of his kimono are torn off, and he wears blue-and-yellow track pants with brown sandals. He also wields a vintage flintlock revolver as a power-up that can aid him while in-battle.

Personality

It's difficult to pinpoint Samurai Asshole's exact personality, but what is clear is that he seems to value honor before any sense of reason. After his master's accidental demise, he didn't hesitate in avenging him by attacking the temple where the three religious leaders invited him and slaying everyone there without any hint of remorse. Despite them all apologizing for the tragedy, he continued on his crusade of revenge, even going so far as to kill a god for interfering with his objective. It is more than likely that he is far from the noble warrior one would expect from a samurai.

Abilities

As his name implies, Samurai Asshole is an exceptionally skilled swordsman and combatant. As a samurai, he is someone who favors the use of the traditional katana and has a mostly sword-based fighting style. Though his movement is rather sluggish, his raw strikes prove to be incredibly powerful. However, in some instances, he is shown to be somewhat capable in other forms of combat. In Newgrounds Rumble, he occasionally utilizes some martial arts and appears to have basic knowledge in firearms, seeing as he uses a pistol for his special attack.

History

Samurai Asshole

In Samurai Asshole, the titular samurai makes his dynamic debut. After his master became a guest of honor at a festival and died after choking on a piece of chicken, Samurai Asshole went to avenge his master's death, despite the sorrow expressed by the leaders. Whether it was simply out of tradition is unclear, but it is likely. He murders multiple guards and the divine dragon, Draco, before finding a mysterious spaceship. He flies away from Earth's atmosphere into the depths of space (which is noticed by the Penilians), and ends up landing in a village of "Smorfs". Just as he continues his murderous rampage, he is shocked by something off-screen. What happens to Samurai Asshole after this is unknown.

Newgrounds Rumble

In Newgrounds Rumble, Samurai Asshole appears as a playable character. In his story mode, he enters the Newgrounds Portal in search of the one who destroyed his village. At the end of his story mode, the people of Newgrounds bow to him, christening him as their new ruler. However, Samurai Asshole denies this position and leaves them to sort out their own mess, continuing his journey to find the one who destroyed his fallen city.

Trivia

• Samurai Asshole could have been inspired by Haohmaru and Ukyo from the Samurai Shodown series.
  • MindChamber's redesign was directly based on the character Musashi from the 1998 Squaresoft game Brave Fencer Musashi.
• The true fate of Samurai Asshole remains, to this day, unknown, as the game never reached any proper conclusion from Tom Fulp.
  • This lack of an ending is the reason why Samurai Asshole was included in the roster of Newgrounds Rumble.
• According to the game's HUD, Samurai Asshole's real name is Fah Q', which is a pun on the phrase "fuck you".
• In Newgrounds Rumble, his attacks in-game are described as strong, but also slow overall. This is actually a callback to the original game, where it was notorious for being slow and laggy, even given the time of its debut (this could be blamed on its creation in Flash 4).
  • In the character select screen, Samurai Asshole's name is shortened to "S'Asshole".
