Hanzo
- "A true ninja can fight without his sense of sight. Having night vision goggles helps, too."
- ―Hanzo, Pico's School
Hanzo (real name Harold) is one of the primary antagonists of Pico's School. He is a member of the Goth Punks and the third boss of the game. In contrast with the group's aesthetic, he is a skilled ninja warrior with incredibly superhuman speed and night vision goggles.
General information
Physical appearance
Hanzo has tan skin, spiky brown hair, and black eyes. He wears a dark blue ninja uniform with matching geta sandals and a red cape wrapped around his neck. He is found wearing yellow night vision goggles with a red visor on his head and wielding a large katana with a yellow tsuka. In MindChamber's redesign for a proposed Pico's School remake, he appears to have an armored shoulder pad and fingerless gloves.
In Pico's Cousin 2, his eyes are now white and occasionally flash red. He instead wears a red ninja uniform with a matching red mask and dark red boots, and his hair is hanging down instead of sticking up. His katana is also more angular, with a brown tsuka.
Personality
Out of all the main members of the Goth Punks, Hanzo is one of the few who doesn't follow either of the goth, punk, or rock subcultures at all. Instead, he replicates the ways of the Japanese ninja, from his outfit, overall theme, and by simply being both a skilled swordfighter and an incredibly fast runner. Surprisingly, he appears to be quite clever and extremely dangerous, as he already killed two students in the girls' bathroom, was well aware he couldn't hope to have a fair fight with Pico in broad daylight, and wore darker clothing so he could blend in with a pitch-black room.
In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, it's revealed he's not even Japanese—he is merely a Western otaku who proudly displays his love for Japanese culture in anime and manga, especially ninja, and expresses frustration over the student body not knowing the difference between manga and anime. He mentions having set up "the perfect trap", further hinting at his more cunning side. It is also revealed that Hanzo was reluctant to kill others in the school, but agreed to do it in order to not disappoint Cassandra. He was also surprised that Pico, who's known to be a beloved popular kid, would even notice him.
Abilities
Hanzo is a surprisingly quick and dangerous ninja, despite him not being Japanese. As a ninja, he has remarkable skill in utilizing stealth, swift movements, and presumably martial arts. His blue ninja garb acts as a strategic advantage, helping him blend in the dark. He also sports a pair of night vision goggles over his forehead, which he uses to his advantage during his boss fight, with the glowing visor being the only hint of where he is. In Pico's Cousin 2, he is brought back from the dead by the Penilians with alien tech, apparently augmenting his strength and speed. However, this proved to be ineffectual after he is promptly defeated by Otis.
Relationships
The following is based solely on canonical information. Characters unrelated to the Pico franchise are not included. |
Cassandra
In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, it is revealed that Hanzo didn't want to kill anyone, but took part in the school shooting anyway because he didn't want to disappoint Cassandra, who was the only person that had treated him well.
History
Pico's School
In Pico's School, Hanzo is found inside the girl's bathroom, apparently having killed two girls that ran afoul of him. After encountering Pico, Hanzo gives him a prideful speech about being a true ninja, and the fight begins as the lights in the bathroom turn off. During the battle, Hanzo attacks with his sword and Pico fights back in complete darkness. Only the light from Hanzo's night vision goggles can be seen, which Pico uses to know where to shoot. In the end, Hanzo is killed, and his head is promptly separated from his body, dropping his night vision goggles.
Pico Roulette
In Pico Roulette, Hanzo appears as a playable character.
Pico's School: Love Conquers All
In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, Hanzo can still be found inside the girl's bathroom. Here, he is referred to by his real name, Harold. When Pico and Cassandra talk with him, Harold reveals that he doesn't actually want to kill people but agreed to do so because Cassandra was the only person who was nice to him, and he was afraid of letting her down. Harold also explains how he is bullied because of his appreciation of Japanese culture and can't stand when people don't know the difference between anime and manga. Pico tells Harold that he is also a big anime fan and gets Harold to realize that he has been making unfair assumptions about people. They then both agree to get together and watch Akira later that weekend, becoming friends.

Pico's Cousin 2
In Pico's Cousin 2, Hanzo is revealed to have been revived by the Penilians. Now working with the Neo Goth Punks as a cyborg ninja, he has a rematch with Pico and presumably bested him in combat, as he is later found imprisoned in a cage. Eventually, he crosses paths with his cousin Otis, who disputes this claim and argues that Pico would have easily defeated Hanzo, and the two proceed to fight. Despite his supposed stronger form, Hanzo ends up losing the battle and dies, bleeding out on the floor once again.

Trivia
- Hanzo is directly based off the historical figure, Hanzo Hattori, via the version of him from the Samurai Shodown series.[2]
- However, it's also possible that he could be based on Strider Hiryu from the Strider series. This is due to Pico's Hanzo and Hiryu both sharing similar attire and spiky brown hair.
- In Pico Roulette, Hanzo's name has previously been spelled as "Hanzou" but Tom Fulp later stated that due to being based off of Hanzo Hattori, the spelling "Hanzo" is more grammatically correct, despite the name Hanzo in general having room for an extra "u" via circumflex/accent renders.[2]
- In Pico's School: Love Conquers All, it's revealed that Hanzo's real name is Harold. This suggests that he's American, rather than Japanese.
- Unlike Cyclops and Alucard, Hanzo is the only miniboss in Pico's School who cannot be spared and is required to be killed in-game.
- Hanzo's visor reflects his emotional state and changes with his expressions, as seen in Pico Roulette where it forms angry eyebrows after a tie, a sweatdrop after a loss, and a smiley face after a win.
- In his death animation for Pico Roulette, his dead body is a reused sprite from Pico's School.
- In Pico's Cousin 2, despite being stronger after being rebuilt with Penilian tech and his claims of defeating Pico, Hanzo lacks all the advantages he had in his original appearance, with his red clothes offering no strategic advantages in either the light or the dark, and his only tactic being wildly slashing and speeding past Otis.
- Tom Fulp had previously stated that Hanzo's gender is unknown,[1] but it is questionable whether this is still true, as Fulp later referred to Hanzo using the pronoun "he".[2]
- Tom Fulp has confirmed that some of Hanzo's favorite music artists are Rat & Co and BABYMETAL. He also enjoys listening to soundtracks from films and video games, such as Akira and Samurai Shodown.[3]
- Fulp also confirmed that Hanzo's favorite stage music from Samurai Shodown is, fittingly enough, Hanzo Hattori's stage music.[3]
