"You deserved it, you weirdass."
Otis, Pico's Cousin

Otis is the main protagonist of Pico's Cousin and its sequel Pico's Cousin 2, two fan-made spinoff games of the Newgrounds classic, Pico's School. Created by Magna, he is the younger cousin of Pico who gets involved into his own misadventures. He shares very similar attributes with his cousin, which is apparently due to him having "warrior genes" that were passed down through him and his family.

Although he had rarely made appearances in subsequent Flash animations, Otis has a very notable cameo in Pico vs. Convict as one of the Convict's many transformations, and can be seen in Friday Night Funkin' as part of Pico's "Stress" remix.

General information

Physical appearance

Otis has light black hair, a blue T-shirt with long sleeves, light blue or cyan denim jeans, and sports a pair of dull gray sneakers with bright yellow soles. Like many characters in the Pico shared universe, he has distinctive white eyes with no pupils as a stylistic choice. In Pico's Cousin 2, he has a slimmer physique than before, and he now wears a golden ring on his right index finger (the latter of which is noticeably absent in some of the game's artwork). His assets are noticeably traced from Pico's main idle pose in the unreleased Pico 2.

In Pico vs. Convict, as Convict shapeshifts into him, Otis' hair and shirt are now a darker shade of black and blue, respectively, and he is also seen wielding a gladiator mace. In Friday Night Funkin', Otis recieves an updated redesign: he now dons a blue sweater with a white button-up shirt tucked underneath, his pants are grayer, his hair is spikier, his sneakers are colored white with yellowish-orange laces and soles, and he's wearing a lavender-white backpack. He is also seen wielding two AK-47s, like in the original Pico's Cousin.

Powers and abilities

Much like Pico, Otis is naturally proficient with firearms. Thanks to his "warrior genes", he is an excellent marksman and is capable of dual wielding guns like his older cousin. In both of his major appearances, he has used handguns, shotguns, assault rifles, and even a high-tech laser pistol courtesy of Alien Hominid in Pico's Cousin 2. Despite his small stature, it's shown that he has enough upper body strength to carry around a pair of AK-47s. Otis is also shown to have a love for skateboarding, performing on the electric guitar, and playing video games.

Personality

Initially, Otis is described as being "wimpier" compared to his red-haired cousin; however, this all changes during the events of Pico's Cousin, as he becomes confident with himself and faces his fears. When faced with terrorists, ghostly spirits, and killer aliens from outer space, he grows more unfazed. He is also shown to be a wisecracker, often making remarks towards someone else's idiocy in annoyance or actively mocking them with childish insults.

He also shows genuine care for his family, as he instantly springs into action when his father, grandmother and older cousin Pico are kidnapped by the Neo Goth Punks, and risks his life to save them all in Pico's Cousin 2. Along with this, he doesn't like being deceived, as seen in the alternate ending of Pico's Cousin. Upon learning that the government staged the mall shooting, he is understandably pissed by this and calls out the FBI agent that "rescued" him for practically throwing him into danger in the first place.

He is also a huge fan of Alien Hominid, as he went through the events of the mall shooting to try to pick up a copy of the Alien Hominid video game (though he was unsuccessful in the end), and in Pico's Cousin 2, he's absolutely overjoyed when he finally gets to meet a member of the Hominid race before it immediately tries to kill him.

History

Pico's Cousin

In Pico's Cousin, Otis eagerly heads to a local shopping mall to get a copy of the Alien Hominid video game. However, a terrorist group assumes control of the mall, and he is forced to take action. As he thwarts the perpetrators, Otis has a final confrontation with their leader, Gangrene, who reveals his true intentions to test Otis' abilities in the battlefield and unleash his "warrior genes". Now mortally wounded, Gangrene activates a self-destruct device in a last-ditch attempt to kill Otis. However, before he can do so, Otis narrowly escapes the explosion when he is saved in the nick of time by a helicopter, and Sarge, the FBI agent aboard the aircraft, commends him for his heroism.

However, in the alternate ending, Otis accidentally uncovers a government conspiracy when he realizes that two of the employees from the mall were actually the very people piloting the helicopter, working under Sarge, who was currently interrogating him. With his cover now blown, he reveals to Otis that the entire incident at the mall was staged by the American government to recruit child soldiers for military operations. This was partly brought about to awaken his warrior genes, ensuring he would be prepared for greater, more dangerous threats by the time they decide to recruit him in the future. Angered by being thrust into such peril, Otis confronts Sarge over this breach of trust before proceeding to gun down those who arrived to "rescue" him, all while making a narrow escape from the exploding helicopter.

Pico's Cousin 2

In Pico's Cousin 2, Otis is forced by his father to visit his grandmother at the retirement home she's staying at to celebrate her winning a knitting contest. However, his family is almost immediately kidnapped, leaving Otis to search for them alone. Soon, he finds himself fighting against the next generation of Goth-Punks founded by their leader, Damien. After defeating them and saving his loved ones (including Pico, who was also kidnapped), Otis and his family move out of the city to avoid the Penilians. In the meantime, Otis' grandmother gives him the Alien Hominid game as a reward for his efforts.

Pico vs. Convict

In Pico vs. Convict, Otis makes a cameo appearance through one of Convict's transformations. While confronting Pico, he briefly transforms into Otis and summons a mace to fight him before shifting back to his original form.

Friday Night Funkin'

In Friday Night Funkin', Otis makes his long-awaited return as a guest character in the Pico Mix version of "Stress", where he takes the place of Pico standing on the speakers and killing any Tankmen that try to get close.

Trivia

  • The original Pico's Cousin contains Otis' biography that can be viewed while hovering over Otis during the preloader; however, the top text containing Otis' name, height, weight, age and blood type cannot be seen in-game normally due to the text being colored the same as the background.
    • The text can be read normally when the background for the preloader is changed to a different color.
      • Name: Otis
      • Weight: 154 pounds.
      • Height: 4' 2".
      • Age: 11.
      • Blood Type: AB.
  • In Pico's Cousin 2, Otis has notably lost significant weight compared to his first appearance. When asked about the change, Magna replied that Otis' dad had put him through some intense training to help protect him from anyone trying to take advantage of his abilities.[2]
  • MindChamber had planned to get Tom Fulp's permission to put a cameo of Otis in Pico 2, but it is unknown whether he accepted or denied the request.[3]
  • Pico's design was directly inspired by one of the children depicted on Children's Tylenol Cold.[4] Coincidentally, another child featured on the product bears a resemblance to Otis.
  • Before appearing in Stress (Pico Mix), Otis was confirmed to exist in the Friday Night Funkin' universe by PhantomArcade.[5]
    • His Friday Night Funkin' design was created by gackt enzo[6] and was originally made for a hypothetical mod.[7]
