Your master is dead and you're out for revenge, against everyone! - Newgrounds Description

Samurai Asshole is a side-scrolling beat 'em up game released on September 26, 1999, and is set in the same universe as the Pico franchise,[2] created by Tom Fulp. Developed in Macromedia Flash 4, it was Fulp's first major Flash game to be made after Pico's School, and set the stage for future brawlers on Newgrounds.

Story

Samurai Asshole's master was a guest of honor at a festival held by three religious leaders. When his master choked on a piece of chicken and died, he was obligated by tradition to avenge his master's death, despite the sorrow expressed by the leaders. Samurai Asshole fights a group of temple guards before being summoned into the heavens by Draco, a divine dragon god. After defeating Draco, he returns to the surface land, where he fights more guards until stumbling upon a mushroom-shaped spaceship. As he flies away from planet Earth on the rocket, two Penilians observe him from inside their own spaceship and discuss their plans to invade Earth themselves by the time the gods have left. Samurai Asshole then lands in a village of "Smorfs", and after swiftly killing two of its inhabitants, he shouts out in surprise at the sight of something off-screen. Before it can be revealed, the game abruptly ends on a cliffhanger.

Gameplay

The player takes control of the titular Samurai Asshole, a vengeful warrior with an insatiable bloodlust for revenge. In this brawler, it is required to kill all groups of enemies that appear onscreen before proceeding to the next stage. Using the computer keyboard, the player can slash away at opponents with a large katana, while also being able to jump and block any incoming attacks.

Reception

As with many submissions in Newgrounds' early history, Samurai Asshole was one of Tom Fulp's more popular Flash games in 1999. It was seen as remarkable upon release, utilizing keyboard-based controls in its gameplay; this would influence later fighting games like Dad 'n Me and Newgrounds Rumble. On May 8, 2006, Fulp re-uploaded it to the automated Flash Portal, and it currently holds an average score of 4.08/5.00. It has received over 700,000 views and won the Daily 4th Place award a day after its re-release.

Trivia

  • Samurai Asshole was created in Flash 4, which didn't allow for consistent keyboard input or depth swapping. As a result of this, the characters' movement has a persistent lag, and it took a significant amount of programming for them to overlap each other based on their depth on the screen.
    • Tom Fulp was tempted to fix it in the re-release, but decided against it, simply to "maintain the crappy integrity of the original".
  • This game marks the first appearance that the Penilians would make after Pico's School, and potentially, their first chronological appearance in the Pico series.
  • The background art was made by guest artist Michael Bregman.
  • According to the HUD, Samurai Asshole's real name is Fah Q', which is a pun on the phrase "fuck you".
  • The Smorfs that appear in the final level are an obvious spoof of the Smurfs, with two "Pranky Smorfs" that are parodies of Jokey Smurf and his recurring explosive gift gag.
  • Despite the claims of a proper conclusion, Fulp ultimately wouldn't follow through with an update of Samurai Asshole, although he had plans for a sequel[3] alongside MindChamber, who redesigned the characters.
