Genetically engineered Überkids have joined Pico's school. Rock Paper Scissors Roulette! - Newgrounds Description

Pico vs. Überkids is a video slot game created by Tom Fulp and released on July 6, 2000. It is the fifth entry of the Pico franchise and the third major game featured on Newgrounds to star Pico. Much like Pico's School, it was created using Adobe Flash 3. In the game, Pico and his friends test their luck against the titular Überkids in a deadly game of Rock Paper Scissors Roulette.

An online multiplayer version of the game, Pico Roulette, would be released on Pico Day 2007.

Plot

The school is introduced to three new students created by the result of the Human Genome Project: the Überkids. Comprised of Überjon, Übersam, and Überfred, the Überkids are genetically engineered to be stronger, smarter and generally better in every way imaginable than regular humans, and their creators wish to test them out on the school's best students. However, since the "best students" have previously died in a violent bloodbath, Pico, Nene, and Darnell are chosen in their place. With Mr. Flacit allowing them to choose the method of competition, Pico selects the very lethal game of Rock Paper Scissors Roulette. And so, with "one gun, one bullet & six chambers", the superiority of the Überkids will be put to the test by "shit-ass luck".

Gameplay

The objective of the game is to beat the Überkids in the luck-based game of chance known as "Rock Paper Scissors Roulette". As the name suggests, it is an amalgamation between the simple hand game of Rock Paper Scissors and the potentially deadly game of Russian roulette. There are three rounds of the game, which involve one member of the main trio each playing a round of rock paper scissors with one of the Überkids. Whoever loses the match is forced to test their luck with the revolver, placing the barrel in their mouth and pulls the trigger, hoping the hammer doesn't land on a full chamber and blow their head off.

Each time a round starts, the revolver has a randomized one-in-six chance of going off. The chamber is not re-spun between turns, so the chance of either character getting the fatal bullet increases as the round goes on, until either one of the students or one of the Überkids dies, and then the next student and Überkid face off in the next. The first one to win at least two out of three rounds wins the game.

Reception

Being released before the creation of the Flash Portal, determining the initial popularity of Pico vs. Überkids is nearly impossible. However, once it was re-released on May 1, 2006, in celebration of Pico Day, the game would receive positive reception and earn the Daily 4th Place award almost a day later. On Newgrounds, it currently has over 1.5 million views, and an average score of 4.67/5.00. Additionally, Pico vs. Überkids is featured in the Pico collection.

Pico vs. Überkids would also receive greater publicity by being featured on FHM's 100 Greatest Online Games list on May 23, 2002.[2] However, this drew the unwanted attention of Celador's legal team, who requested that a music loop sampled from the hit game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? be removed.[3] Tom Fulp complied while also stating, "At least now we know what magazine this guy jerks off to while he's on the toilet."[4]

Trivia

  • The short loop of music that the Celador lawyers requested to be removed from the original version of Pico vs. Überkids was "Fastest Finger First", composed by Keith and Matthew Strachan.
  • Each of the main trio have unique expressions when they lose a round of Rock Paper Scissors:
    • When Nene loses a round and has to try her luck with the revolver, she will proceed to suck on the barrel in a suggestive manner before pulling the trigger.
    • After Darnell loses a round and picks up the revolver, if the chamber is already empty when he pulls the trigger, he lets out a joyful laugh as a short sound bite from Reading Rainbow will play. The sound bite will still play after he dies.
    • If Pico loses a round and tries his luck with the revolver, he will lean in closer and pull the trigger twice. However, on the off-chance that the revolver's trigger was already pulled four times without going off, if he loses the next round, he will pull the trigger only once.
  • Once the revolver's trigger is pulled five times without going off, whoever loses the next round of Rock Paper Scissors will have the Grim Reaper standing over them, signifying that the gun will fire a loaded round, killing them instantly.
  • If two out of the main trio dies in the game's three rounds, the winning Überkids proceed to moon the player and defecate, mocking the losing team.
  • After the Überkids' corpses are dumped in the pit at the end of the game, if the player waits about 10 seconds without pressing "Continue", the truck itself will slide down into the pit.
